A century and a half ago Francis F. Hayden wrote that the view of Co. Carlow from Mount Leinster was "as wild, as romantic and picturesque a range of scenery as ever attracted the pen of a Byron, the pencil of a Reynolds or the genius of a Thomson".
He talked about the country's "fertile vales and lawns, unfolding their several beauties to the feasted eye of the entranced traveller".
